Every October 1, we get bombarded by Pink everything because its Breast Cancer Awareness month!!!! And most notably the National Football League, my favorite pastime, comes out in Pink everything. Pink shoes, pink ribbons on the footballs, pink sweat bands, Pink socks. Every piece of wearable equipment can be had in Pink. I have not checked but I bet there are pink jock straps in the locker room( and no I wont follow up on that one ). The NFL as we have found out over the last couple of off-seasons cares a lot about its image and THE SHIELD! The Shield being the label for the NFL. The players, the coaches, the front office staff is supposed to do everything it can to protect and uphold the image of THE SHIELD! During October the SHIELD is concerned with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and decks out its people, stadiums and fields with Pink to let everyone know how concerned it is with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October. Because without women there is no football.
The NFL tries to show everyone how concerned it is with this deadly disease that takes our mothers, our sisters and our aunts way too early. So the NFL dresses itself up in PINK uniform parts, PINK official hats and PINK ribbons and ties to show how much it cares. To its credit the NFL auctions off alot if not all of the pink unifornm pieces and then gives the proceeds to local cancer groups to fight the deadly disease.
But as I sit through another October PINK wash of my TV set I can't help wonder if its real or as the NFL as shown over the last couple of disastrous off seasons just for its image. For instance wouldn't it be better for all involved for the NFL to just donated the money to the American Cancer Association instead of going through all the trouble of making the shoe or jersey or helmet, then having it worn, auctioned off where I am SURE everyone is getting its little hooks into each little piece of the pie before a few pennies gets to the people doing the research on the disease? Instead put big counters in each stadium that count up each dontaion to the Breast Cancer Association, and watch how much REAL money gets to the universities and scientists doing the work to STOP this deadly disease. Not that I care how stupid my team looks all in Silver Pink, black and blue. I am guessing MUCH more money would get to the women who need this help NOW, not after Levon Bell wears the shoe, then gets it to the auction house, then auctioned and ~$1.45 of that $200 pair of shoes gets to the woman taking in her last breaths. That woman who was somebodies mom. That woman who was someones wife and lover. That woman who was someones loving sister. Is there NOT a better way???
